In the southern Ardèche, the GR4F, between Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, offers an alternative to the famous Ardèche Gorges hike if water levels prevent you from taking the historic route.
This route can be done over two days, with accommodation at Saint-Remèze or Bidon booked in advance.
You can book a return shuttle from Sauze with a canoe hire company; contact details available from the Tourist Office.

Description
The start of the walk is not on the GR but on a yellow and white signposted PR trail.
From the Tourist Office, walk along the car park to the roundabout. Cross the road

- At the sign, take the road to the left and follow the yellow and white signs for Joncier for 1.6km. When you reach Joncier, follow signs for La Barthe; cross the River Ibie and climb up to the Razal plateau. Follow the yellow and white signs.
- When you reach the La Barthe signpost, leave the yellow and white markings and follow the red and white GR markings.
- Once you reach Saint-Remèze, you can stop here to spend the night (having booked your accommodation in advance). There is a grocery shop, bakery and restaurant.
- Continue along the GR4F through the village of Bidon (there is a restaurant in the village or at the Grotte de Saint-Marcel; ask about opening times and days).
- Continue on to Sauze (the finish of the descent of the Gorges by canoe or on foot if the water level permits - the shuttle buses back to Vallon Pont d'Arc leave from this point) or Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche (shops on site).
