Set off for “Grain de sel” beach, then through oak forests and the garrigue to the pretty little chapel of St-Sulpice, which is surprisingly situated in the middle of a green oasis.

The route takes you along the River Ardèche (swimming is possible at Sauze beach); it then winds its way up and down through holm oak woods and scrubland. There is a very narrow road between the chapel and the hamlet of Trignan. Return to St-Martin-d'Ardèche via a footpath and narrow streets.

Description

From the hiking information board located near the church forecourt and next to the Tourist Office, head down towards Place du Sablas, next to the Ardèche.

  1. At the signpost marked ‘Les Quais’, turn right and head back up the road alongside the Ardèche, following the GR 4F markings (GR). When the path turns right, head down the tarmac ramp to the left and follow the PR marked path as it continues. This path through the woodland runs alongside the river upstream and leads to Sauze. Continue along the road parallel to the river until you reach the far end of the car park.
  2. Take the path that climbs to the right of the gate and the parking meter. When the path joins the road, turn left.  At the fork 100 m further on, turn right and continue uphill to the main road. Cross carefully and take the dirt track. At the first junction, go straight on; at the second, head uphill to the right. Further up, do not take the path on the left (continue to follow the GR markings).
  3. When you reach the crossroads with the ‘Pleine du Feuillet’ signpost, head down the path on the left (faded sign).
  4. At the signpost marked ‘Le Louby’, turn right (towards Bidon) until you reach the nearby signpost marked ‘Les Truffiéres’. From there, head towards St-Just-d'Ardèche. Head to the right and take the path on the right a few metres from the signpost. You leave the GR4F to follow the PR markings. The path continues through a small valley until you reach a junction. Take the path that climbs to the right. After a steep climb, you’ll reach a fork; turn right twice to take a wide straight track.
  5. At the signpost marked ‘Plaine des Catalans’, turn left towards ‘Chapelle St-Sulpice’. Then, turn left again at the fork 150 metres further on.
  6. At the signpost for “Chapelle St-Sulpice”, you’ll come out onto a vineyard: follow it to the right and take the path on the left to visit the pretty chapel set in lush greenery. Return to the small tarmac road and follow it to the hamlet.
At the signpost for “Trignan Haut”, continue straight on.
  7. At the "Trignan Haut" signpost, continue straight ahead.
  8. At the “Trignan Bas” signpost, turn right and then right again. Then take the narrow path to the right as you leave the hamlet. GR markings on a small wooden post. Follow the GR 42 markings to the end. Take the path between the vineyards to the edge of the woods. Turn left and take the path that leads into the woods. Walk along a field and take the farm track to the left. Stay on the main track, which becomes a small road.At the fork, head up to the right along the “Chemin de la Pause des Alliberts”. Then turn immediately left and continue straight ahead along this path.
  9. After the house decorated by the artist Max Ernst, turn right and then immediately left. When the path curves to the right, go straight on to take the track that leads into the woods. Cross a dry stream and turn left. At the fork, turn left until you reach the road and go down it to the left.
  10. After passing under the bridge, turn left. Walk around the campsite, heading down to the right, and at the crossroads, turn right. At the Domaine de la Croix Blanche, turn left. Continue straight on along this street until you reach ‘rue des Placettes’ on your left. Take this street, passing two small squares; then take the arched passageway on the right to return to the starting point.
