Cycling through Vineyards and Valleys
Don’t underestimate the 1,000 metres of elevation gain on this long route. It can be broken down into a 33-km core loop, a return journey from Alba-la-Romaine to Valvignères of just over 13 km; and a loop through the Sainte Beaume Gorges from Saint-Montan to Larnas, covering approximately 7 km. It can be combined with Loop 4, which adds 12 km of picturesque country lanes starting from Saint-Montan. The difficulty naturally varies depending on the type of bike: road, hybrid or e-bike.
This signposted circular route offers varied, timeless scenery, taking in vineyards, lavender fields, meadows, wooded slopes and rocky outcrops.
Description
From the charming village of Saint-Montan, head up through the Sainte-Beaume Gorges: the Hermit’s Cave is nestled in the limestone cliffs on the right.
Pass through the small village of Larnas; then, cross the lavender fields, vineyards and almond groves of the Laoul plateau. At the small pass, admire the Dent de Rez (meaning ‘sawtooth’ in Occitan and the highest point in southern Ardèche). Descend into the Nègue valley via the pretty hamlet of Haute Valgayette. Passing fields of irises in bloom in May, continue to the village of Saint-Thomé, perched on its rocky outcrop. Gently climb the Dardaillon valley to the village of Valvignères (from the Latin Vallis vinaria: the valley of the vine). Head to Alba-la-Romaine, a charming village well worth a visit, not forgetting the La Roche district, the ancient site and the museum.
Return to Valvignères; then stop off at the Mas d’Intras and cross the small Col de la Fare pass. Follow the Mure stream through its charming little valley, then climb towards Gras: a beautiful stone village. Don’t miss the viewpoint at the cemetery and its chapel. From La Nègue, head up to the Laoul plateau via the hamlet of Fontfreyde. Visit the Romanesque church of Larnas before descending towards Saint-Montan via the Val d’Eylieux. Stroll through the medieval village and make use of the e-bike service area under the plane trees.
You can set off from any of the six villages, all of which are equipped with two e-bike charging points, at least one bench, an information board and bike racks.
