A short tour of Saint-Marcel
This charming medieval village, with its ochre-coloured buildings and narrow streets paved with pebbles from the Rhône, certainly has plenty of charm. The small town, surrounded by ramparts, is known for its cave (Saint-Marcel), its vineyards in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône, and its iconic monuments such as Bernis Castle and Saint-Joseph Chapel.

From the hiking information board on Place du Ponteil, near the old post office in Saint-Marcel, walk past the square with the wash house, then take the narrow street on the right, ‘Rue de la Fontaine de Viviers’; then turn right onto the square and take the first street on the left. Next, walk past the church on the right along Rue Prunier. At the end of the street, turn left onto Rue du Barry, then take the first right and the first left. Walk 80 metres and
- Take the road on the right that climbs steeply towards Saint Joseph’s Chapel. Continue along this road and, when you reach a fork,
- carry on to the left. At the end of a wood on your right
- turn left.
- At the T-junction, turn left, then take the first path on the right. Continue along the main path until you reach a small tarmac road. Follow it to the right for 130 metres.
At the ‘Souchas’ signpost, follow the GR (red and white markings) towards La Capelade (0.7 km) on the left. Walk down the road for around 500 m, then take the dirt track straight ahead; once you reach the main road, turn right and then immediately left
At the signpost at Plan de Lage, turn left to continue on the GR42 towards Saint-Marcel-Ardèche, then leave the GR42 and follow the yellow and white markings.
At the Lafare signpost, continue towards Saint-Marcel-Ardèche. Continue straight ahead and, once you reach Rue Barry Ouest, - turn right to reach Place du Ponteil

Access and parking
From Aubenas or Montélimar, take the D86 to Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, following the Rhône
From Vallon-Pont d'Arc, take either the D290 (the Gorges route) or the D4 towards Saint-Remèze, then towards Bidon and Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche.
From Bollène or Bagnols-sur-Cèze, join the D86 from Pont-Saint-Esprit to reach Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche.
Park in the car park at Place du Ponteil, next to the Ancienne Poste.
